Primary school pupils in Sunderland are being encouraged to learn about healthy eating and nutrition with the help of an exciting competition, which is being launched this week. The Delicious Food and Drink Festival, which takes place on 14th and 15th July, has joined forces with Sunderland City Council and the School Dinner Service to launch the Delicious School Dinners competition.
The competition is being targeted at primary schools in Sunderland and youngsters are being asked to invent their own delicious school dinner in class, describing the ingredients and recipe they would use and by drawing a picture.
Keith Miles, Catering Manager at Sunderland City Council, said: "We are asking the children to come up with an idea that's tasty and healthy to show that they are aware of what food is good for them and to highlight that school dinners are nutritious."
"This will be a fun activity for classes to get involved with and we're sure it will encourage pupils to take an interest in their food and what it's made of."
The winning child will have their delicious school dinner prepared for their whole school for lunch before the end of term as well as being offered the chance to make their meal in the Delicious Theatre Kitchen with Host Chef Mark Earnden (of the Food Education Company).
The winner will also get to meet CBBC'S Gastronut presenter Stefan Gates at the festival, who is known for his exhilarating cooking stunts with extraordinary foods.
The winner's school will also win a free 12 month membership to the Food Education Company, which is worth £500 and includes an extensive range of lesson plans, resources, updates and discounts.
The Delicious Festival, which is in its inaugural year, will be held at the unique setting of the European home of Nissan in Sunderland and is expected to attract thousands of visitors across the weekend from the north east and beyond.
The festival will play host to a variety of pop up restaurants, exhibitors as well as demonstrations in the Delicious Theatre Kitchen from leading chefs from the north east such as Kenny Atkinson of Rockcliffe Hall, Dave Coulson of the Castle Eden Inn and Bob Arora of Sachins.
