An extra treat - Join Friends of North East Farmers’ Markets

TASTE Club members are invited to join Friends of North East Farmers’ Markets, and if you join before Sunday 9 September, you are invited along on the next Friends’ visit. Which is a visit to a Blue Bell Organics on Sunday 16 September in North Yorkshire.

For an annual subscription of £10, Friends of North East Farmers’ Markets receive a quarterly newsletter, access to the Friends section of the NEEFM website, advance news about events at farmers’ markets in the region and invitations to two or three exclusive visits to producers each year. Full details on how to join at www.neefm.org.uk/friends-of-farmers-markets

The Blue Bell Organics Visit

You are invited to visit Blue Bell Organics, who attend more Farmers' Markets in NE England than any other, although they are based just over the border in Yorkshire on the outskirts of Richmond. Katrina Palmer and Steve Barker have kindly agreed to host this visit. When they took over the walled garden 10 years ago the site was seriously overgrown, they started off with a small rotavator and lots of enthusiasm and have made loads of progress since then. They now have a small tractor, 5 poly tunnels and lots of vintage machinery to help them grow a wide range of vegetable crops and look after their orchard of over 70 fruit trees. As well as growing many vegetables and fruits they also make juices and conserves. In the North East we have very few vegetable growers - so this is a very special opportunity to see what bringing leeks to market involves and find what is required to be a Soil Association certified grower - and how the weather is so important.

This should be a really enjoyable and interesting day out. Places are limited so book your place quickly!

The aim is to get there for 11am to enjoy a local food picnic lunch (always a real feast!), hopefully outside but under cover if raining, then leave around 3pm.
